On the Power in the House: In a galaxy far away & a time long ago -- otherwise known as the waning days of my involvement with a certain music company -- I was introduced to a young singer. We had demo to do for Diet Coke and she seemed perfect. We came up with a great track that went absolutely nowhere but I never forgot that voice. In fact, if people asked me to play something from the old days, THAT is the track I pulled out and it was because of her performance. Well, flash forward to a couple of decades later and last nite at The Cutting Room. I went to hear The MarTays -- the All-Star session players band that backs that singer, Martee LeBow. Awesome? Incredible? Words fall way short of any mark capable of adequate description. Martee is, as the pianist and arranger for the group, Irwin Fisch says, "a force of nature." For me, it was wonderful to see old friends I used to book for advertising gigs like Larry Saltzman, Andy Snitzer, and the ever so cool Curtis King Jr sounding more incredible than ever and, wow, it's just mind-blowing to hear the firepower of this 14-piece band playing behind the head-snapping vocals. THAT is an ARSENAL and the photos can only do mild justice. I actually have over 400 exposures, which I whittled down to 150 keepers. I could go no lower than these 40+ just to give some kind of an idea of what was there to experience. This gang doesn't perform together that often so if you hear about an upcoming show follow my advice: get your ass into one of the seats or, hell, get to the Standing Room Only section.
