I fell in love with photography as a young man. I had heroes - mostly men but not entirely (Dorothea Lange, Deborah Turbeville and the incredible Louise Dahl-Wolfe come to mind). Singular characters who portrayed the mysteries of reality by stopping time and employing the alchemy of powders and baths and paper, communicating sights and scenes otherwise to never have been witnessed. Of course time marches on and that world has changed. Today, everyone is a photographer. There is nothing in the world not witnessed or “captured.” Nothing that is except the mysteries. For those mysteries are still there and waiting to be explored. They have just relocated. So my search has required taking my cameras and diving into the hidden realms that reveal themselves through art. Be it mixed media projects that start with photography or be it images inspired by photography that otherwise are explored with more traditional techniques. This is how I break the sameness.
